SUMMARY:Double Panel Binding—Three Sessions (with kit)
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Erin Fletcher (artist bio)Venue: Online (Zoom)Days & Dates: Fridays & Tuesday\, July 24\, 28\, & 31 of 2026Workshop times: Pacific Time\, Session 1: 10 AM – 11 AM\, Sessions 2 & 3: 10 AM – Noon Skill Level: All levels\, some binding experience helpful  \n\n\n\nClass Description: The Double Panel Binding came about when Erin was creating a decorative binding for a large\, unwieldy accordion text block. The goal was to develop a binding style that could open completely flat making it easier to unfurl the accordion. Pulling from box-making techniques learned from John DeMerritt and der gebrochene rücken (a variant of the German Bradel Binding)\, the covers come together when fully opened\, inviting a design that can span across the entire binding. Each board is constructed separately and out of two covered panels. The inner boards conceal the spine attachment and give space to sew in the accordion or single signature. \n\n\n\nIn addition to making a model of the Double Panel binding\, we will also print one-of-a-kind mono prints for covering the outer boards.  \n\n\n\nRequired Tools and Supplies: Bookbinding Tools \n\n\n\n\nBlue Tape\n\n\n\nBone Folder\n\n\n\nCraft Knife (Olfa or X-Acto)\n\n\n\nCutting Mat\n\n\n\nGlue Brush – size: small and medium\n\n\n\nPencil\n\n\n\nPin Vise (size B) or Awl\n\n\n\nPVA • Ruler – with metric\n\n\n\nSanding Block or Stick\n\n\n\nScissors\n\n\n\nSewing Needle – #18\n\n\n\nThread: 18/3 Dyed Linen\n\n\n\nTriangle – 45/45/90\n\n\n\nWaste Paper\n\n\n\nWeights \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPrintmaking Tools \n\n\n\n\nBrayer – soft rubber (have 1-3 on hand)\n\n\n\nClean-up supplies: paper towels\, spray bottle with water\, baby wipes\n\n\n\nGelli Plate (or similar brand) – size: 8 x 10″ or smaller\n\n\n\nMark making tools – botanicals (real or fake)\, stencils\, doilies\, mesh\, bubble wrap\, cotton swabs\, brushes\, sponges\, etc.\n\n\n\nPaint – fluid acrylic (matte or metallic)\n\n\n\nWaste Paper \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $160Member: $200Non-member: $275 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount.
