SUMMARY:The Flatback Case Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Daniel Kelm ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n\n\n\nDays: Thursdays\, every other week \n\n\n\nDate: March 12\, 26\, April 9\, 23\, May 7\, 21\, & June 4\, 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 10 AM to 1:30PM\, Pacific Time\, including breaks \n\n\n\nSkill Level: All levels \n\n\n\nClass Description:Imagine a flatback binding that opens beautifully\, each and every spread opening flat! \n\n\n\nIn this course\, you will make two books: one with a traditional sewn-all-along text block comprised of text-weight paper folded and gathered into sections; and a board book (what Tim Ely calls a Drumleaf) configuration that opens completely flat even with thick printmaking paper. Consider the appeal of a print stretching from one fore edge to the other\, interrupted only by the fold. This is achievable with the board-book-style text block. No thread interrupts the visual of the image. \n\n\n\nThe boards will be paper-covered\, and your spine will be covered in cloth. \n\n\n\nThe materials kit will include enough pieces to make models at various stages of production. These will serve as excellent reminders when you come back again and again to use this binding structure. \n\n\n\nWe will have ample opportunity for discussing a broad range of topics\, such as: the dynamics of how books open and close; the use of wet gluing with polyvinyl acetate (PVA) and paste\, and how to modify the adhesive to give it desirable working characteristics; and the management of the drying operations that result with the use of wet glue. \n\n\n\nFurther notes from Daniel:“I was inspired to create this binding style when I first saw Gary Frost’s Sewn Boards Binding. The Sewn Boards Binding is suitable for a small book with a text block of a limited number of signatures. The cover boards are flush with the text block\, and the spine is offset. Gary’s development of an offset spine configuration is a great innovation\, and set my imagination working. \n\n\n\nThe offset attachment of the spine is the reason the book is so flexible and opens beautifully. The spine piece of the case is not attached at the spine edge of the cover boards\, as in other books\, but\, rather\, the spine piece attaches some distance in from the spine edge. This seemingly small change results in much more flexibility and movement. \n\n\n\nI asked myself: What if I keep the offset spine\, but take a more finished approach to the covers? A “square” would be attractive. A “square” means the cover boards are some small dimension larger than the text block. \n\n\n\nThe term “case binding” refers to a structure in which the text block and case (the two covers with the spine in between) are constructed independently\, and then brought together in a final assembly. \n\n\n\nMy Flatback Case binding has a case with offset spine that is a three-piece construction—the spine and two cover boards. This means it is built up of smaller\, simpler pieces\, and lends itself to an efficient production process. This binding is suitable for one-of-a-kinds but especially valuable when editioning. \n\n\n\nThe traditional rounded and backed binding is much more common than flatback styles\, but the flatback has the advantage of being simpler overall. For example\, less equipment and less experience are required. In addition\, the flatback has a more contemporary\, less traditional look.” \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. Shipping and kit costs are included in the class price.* \n\n\n\nTools & Supplies: All tools and some supplies to be provided by registrant. Guidance will be offered in SDBA’s timely Welcome Letter or the teacher’s PDFs. \n\n\n\nClass Recordings: Class Recordings will be available to all registrants for one month following each class. \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $540Member: $700Non-member: $775 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount. SUMMARY:Introduction to One-Piece Structural Packaging
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Paul Jackson ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online\, SDBA’s Zoom Account \n\n\n\nDay & Dates: Tuesdays in 2026—starting March 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 & 31 \n\n\n\nTime: Pacific Time\, 9 AM—1:30 PM \n\n\n\nSkill Level: All! No experience is necessary. Nervous beginners are welcome! \n\n\n\nClass Description:In the 1980’s\, Paul created a simple formula for designing the strongest\, self-locking\, one-piece net\, for any enclosed volume (a “net” is a box unfolded flat). Using it\, students can create and make unique boxes that curve\, twist\, slope\, have facets\, and much more. These boxes can be used to preserve and protect the contents\, or they can be used for other purposes such as point-of-sale\, exhibition displays and more. The course will explain the system in detail and give students the opportunity to design and make their own boxes. Everything will be handmade\, but nets can easily be drawn in a computer and made using Cricut or laser printing. \n\n\n\nPaul has taught this method on many occasions to students of design\, maker groups\, and packaging professionals. The method is explained in his book Structural Packaging: Design your own Boxes and 3-D Forms.  \n\n\n\nTools & Supplies: The tool and supply list for class will be included in SDBA’s timely Welcome Letter. \n\n\n\nClass Recordings:Recordings will be available for one month following each class in this series\, for registered students only. \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $304Member: $380Non-member: $455 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount. SUMMARY:Mob of Two Presents Artists’ Books: Form and Content—A Seven Class Series
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Mob of Two – Tiana Krahn & Sara L. Press ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n\n\n\nDays and Dates: Fridays\, October 24\, 31\, November 7\, 14\, 21\, December 5\, & 12 of 2025 \n\n\n\nTime: 1:30 to 3:30 PM\, Pacific Time \n\n\n\nSkill Level: ALL—prior book art experience expected \n\n\n\nClass Description:This 7-session course will support each student through the creation of their own individual artist’s book – that is\, a book that unifies craft and concept into a cohesive whole. We will look at ways that a book’s physical form can reflect and enhance the ideas it “contains.” Materials might inspire a book’s content\, or the other way around. This relationship between form and content will be the generative principle for the book you make during our series of classes. \n\n\n\nPrior to the first class\, students will be given a questionnaire to help generate ideas for their book project if a concept or direction is not yet determined. Students do not need to have a project in mind before the first class. SDBA’s Welcome Letter will be sent approximately two weeks prior to the first class session. The SDBA Welcome Letter will provide a weekly syllabus\, along with tool and material information. \n\n\n\nDuring class time\, we will look at examples of artist books and the different components that must be harmonized to create a successful work of art. Over the course of the class series\, each student will have opportunities to present their work in progress to the group. Instructors and students will explore approaches and give feedback\, as a group\, for each developing work. This process will be valuable to both the student receiving input about their project\, as well as to those giving and observing the feedback\, as it will develop students’ skill in thinking about books as complete works of art\, and will help them practice the process of being accountable in their own artistic choices. Instructors will also discuss practical aspects such as making mock-ups\, where to find tutorials and supplies\, and what to put in your colophon. \n\n\n\nIn between classes\, students will source materials on their own (inspired by our class conversations) and will work independently on their projects. We will not be “making” during class time\, but will be developing projects conceptually and logistically. Please plan for at least one “making session” per week on your own time in between class sessions. \n\n\n\nThe final class\, will be a “show and tell” session. Each student will by then have made either a unique bookwork or a prototype for an edition\, and will have the chance to practice a concise presentation of their work. \n\n\n\nStudents will be expected to have some prior experience with making book structures and should be comfortable learning new ones on their own time if necessary for their project. They should also come with some ideas for projects from which they will narrow down and commit to one after the first class session. \n\n\n\nTools & Supplies: All tools and some supplies to be provided by registrant. Guidance will be offered in SDBA’s timely Welcome Letter or the teacher’s PDFs. \n\n\n\nClass Recordings: Available to all registrants for one month following the last class\, January 12\, 2025. \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $368Member: $460Non-member: $535 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Non-Model Paper Folding (Origami)
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Paul Jackson ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n\n\n\nDate: Thursdays\, September 18 & 25\, October 9\, 16 & 23\, 2025 \n\n\n\nTime: Pacific Time\, 9 AM – 1:00 PM; classroom doors open at 8:50 AM \n\n\n\nSkill Level: ALL — No experience is necessary. Nervous beginners are welcome!  \n\n\n\nClass Description:The course will introduce students to concepts of paper manipulation\, from pleating to crumpling\, via curved folding\, collapsibles\, 2-D and 3-D geometry\, and more. “Non-model” means that we will not be making representational models of flora\, fauna\, and objects; rather\, we will be exploring the creative potential of folding for making 2-D surfaces\, relief surfaces\, and 3-D forms. Written another way: the course will focus on the process\, not the product. This open-ended way of folding means that students will be able to freely adapt folding techniques learned in the course into their own work\, perhaps using other materials. \n\n\n\nThe course is adapted from hundreds of courses and workshops run by Paul with students of design\, maker groups\, and others\, in more than a dozen countries.  \n\n\n\nHis bestselling book\, Folding Techniques for Designers: From Sheet to Form. Second Edition\, is considered the standard text on non-model folding for designers and makers.  \n\n\n\nTools and Supplies:Copy paper\, knife\, ruler\, glue \n\n\n\nClass Recordings:Recordings will be available to registered students for one month following each class. \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $280Member: $350Non-member: $425   \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount.
