Embroidered sunflowers\, tulips\, and lavender burst with color\, layered within a box structure bringing the garden to life. Embroidered trees frame the box opening\, giving it a storybook-like feel. In this class\, students will embroider flowers on a printed photograph that sits in the background. Students will also embroider flowers and trees on dissolvable fabric\, then attach them to binder’s board to create a garden scene. The tunnel book is then enclosed within a box structure. Left-handed instructions available upon request. \n\n\n\nFinished Product: One small tunnel book measuring 4” x 5-1/4” x 3/4” \n\n\n\nDetailed Lesson Plans will be shared prior to the first class along with the SDBA Welcome Letter.  \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. No experience is necessary. Nervous beginners are welcome! \n\n\n\nClass Description:In the 1980’s\, Paul created a simple formula for designing the strongest\, self-locking\, one-piece net\, for any enclosed volume (a “net” is a box unfolded flat). Using it\, students can create and make unique boxes that curve\, twist\, slope\, have facets\, and much more. These boxes can be used to preserve and protect the contents\, or they can be used for other purposes such as point-of-sale\, exhibition displays and more. The course will explain the system in detail and give students the opportunity to design and make their own boxes. Everything will be handmade\, but nets can easily be drawn in a computer and made using Cricut or laser printing. \n\n\n\nPaul has taught this method on many occasions to students of design\, maker groups\, and packaging professionals. We will look at ways that a book’s physical form can reflect and enhance the ideas it “contains.” Materials might inspire a book’s content\, or the other way around. This relationship between form and content will be the generative principle for the book you make during our series of classes. \n\n\n\nPrior to the first class\, students will be given a questionnaire to help generate ideas for their book project if a concept or direction is not yet determined. Students do not need to have a project in mind before the first class. SDBA’s Welcome Letter will be sent approximately two weeks prior to the first class session. The SDBA Welcome Letter will provide a weekly syllabus\, along with tool and material information. \n\n\n\nDuring class time\, we will look at examples of artist books and the different components that must be harmonized to create a successful work of art. Over the course of the class series\, each student will have opportunities to present their work in progress to the group. Instructors and students will explore approaches and give feedback\, as a group\, for each developing work. This process will be valuable to both the student receiving input about their project\, as well as to those giving and observing the feedback\, as it will develop students’ skill in thinking about books as complete works of art\, and will help them practice the process of being accountable in their own artistic choices. Instructors will also discuss practical aspects such as making mock-ups\, where to find tutorials and supplies\, and what to put in your colophon. \n\n\n\nIn between classes\, students will source materials on their own (inspired by our class conversations) and will work independently on their projects. We will not be “making” during class time\, but will be developing projects conceptually and logistically. Please plan for at least one “making session” per week on your own time in between class sessions. \n\n\n\nThe final class\, will be a “show and tell” session. Nervous beginners are welcome!  \n\n\n\nClass Description:The course will introduce students to concepts of paper manipulation\, from pleating to crumpling\, via curved folding\, collapsibles\, 2-D and 3-D geometry\, and more. “Non-model” means that we will not be making representational models of flora\, fauna\, and objects; rather\, we will be exploring the creative potential of folding for making 2-D surfaces\, relief surfaces\, and 3-D forms. Written another way: the course will focus on the process\, not the product. It has a multi compartment top level that is removable. The lid can be fully open and the bottom compartment is dedicated to house bigger sewing items. You will learn tips on how to make a hinged cover. He will also cover all the basic tips and tricks of using fabric for box making. \n\n\n\nArtist Bio: Pietro is native to the northwestern Italian city of Turin where his father Gaetano founded and operated a commercial printing press. His youth spent in the press led him to paper marbling\, restoration and bookbinding. Pietro in 1997 established “La Legatoria del Sole\,” an artisanal and production-oriented bookbindery in Turin. It served Turin’s Municipal Archives\, public and university libraries. After coming to the U.S. he started teaching paper and fabric marbling at the “San Francisco Center for the Book” and at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.  \n\n\n\nTogether with his wife Vanessa he has founded Accardi Book Arts: a book arts studio and bindery in Gardnerville to follow his passion of marbling fabric/paper and to preserve the tradition of handmade books and boxes. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. Historically used in account and record books across Early Modern Europe\, this technique beautifully balances structural function with decorative elements. \n\n\n\nStudents in this workshop will learn how to design and transpose a sewing pattern onto the spine of a paper case\, based on a chosen number of signatures. Then\, with step-by-step instructions\, students will sew their text blocks into the covering materials through leather supports. Decorative elements such as button closures and stitching/embroidering into case paper will also be covered in demos throughout the class\, and students will learn how to strategize an ‘order of operations’ that fits their design choices. \n\n\n\nParticipants will complete their own long stitch binding and leave the class equipped to pursue variations in their future design. \n\n\n\nPrior experience and skills participants need in order to be successful in this workshop: \n\n\n\nIntroduction to bookbinding (or equivalent skill) is recommended. Students will benefit from understanding grain direction and from having the ability to maintain even sewing tension while binding multiple sections—a key aspect of this book structure. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this structure requires precise drawing and measuring\, down to 1-2mm. Additionally\, the process of ‘punching’ the sewing pattern into the case paper and the sections requires some sustained hand strength. \n\n\n\nInstructor will provide access to class slides and will provide registrants with a write up of instructions ahead of the first session for participants to annotate as they find helpful. \n\n\n\nClass Kits:Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. You will learn step-by-step techniques to construct your own variation of Hugo Peller’s box as well as the small book which fits snugly into the box.
