Also\, ink diffusion techniques bring yet another image; drops of ink bloom on wet paper echoing the peeling bark. The result may feel like a memory\, fragmented\, delicate\, gentle. This simple\, yet rather elegant structure requires very little adhesive and each cover is folded out of a single sheet of handmade paper. The book opens relatively flat and is suitable for lightweight text blocks. \n\n\n\nStudents should purchase 4 sheets of paper from the Morgan Conservatory. These sheets will be used for the covers\, so Erin suggests purchasing 4 of the same color or 2 sets of matching colors. The natural folded geometry of simple 2-D and 3-D folding permits many beautiful and ingenious designs to be made. When made in colored or patterned papers\, they make eye-catching additions to any festive event or celebration. \n\n\n\nThese decorations are quick to make. Further\, they are great fun to teach to family or friends.Making them is a WONDERFUL way to spend quality time with people of all ages. Paul will teach a number of simple designs. Some of them will be one-piece\, some will be made from two or more pieces\, slotted together (‘modular origami’). Some will require attaching to a hanging thread\, using a needle. They would tuck these folded treasures into the pockets of their tunics\, always having their sewing supplies of snippets of thread\, needles\, fabrics\, patterns\, small tools and handwork within reach. The Zhen Xian Bao may have as many as 17 different compartments\, all folded from paper and covered by either fabric or a stronger paper. You will be introduced to the basic structure\, making the foundations from two kinds of strong and beautiful Japanese Momigami paper. Embellishments and covers will be made from Chiyogami paper or any other special papers you choose. The book will be cinched closed by Hedi Kyle’s marvelous Belt Closure\, and you will be able to embellish and decorate the many different parts of the book/wallet to make it truly your own. There are so many layers of pockets and hidden compartments where you can place photos\, quotes\, sayings\, and little treasures of all kinds. We will also extend the basic Zhen Xian Bao to also create small books\, cards\, and a few other surprises. Anyone who has completed either or both of these previous courses is eligible to join. Also\, anyone who has tried a little origami\, whether from a book or in a class\, will also be eligible. If you are an absolute beginner\, this course may not be for you. Nevertheless\, if you consider yourself a beginner\, but have manipulated paper in relatively complex ways under your own volition\, you should be OK on the course. \n\n\n\nThe course will revisit some of the techniques and ideas explored on the earlier courses\, but will take them to a more advanced standard. It will also introduce non-orthodox folding techniques\, such as folding with water (yes …water!) to stiffen the paper and crumpling paper\, to make the surface elastic. \n\n\n\nIt is important to emphasize that the course will NOT be focused on highly complex folding techniques\, nor will examples containing excessively long folding sequences be made – we are not making dinosaurs or insects! It is a Japanese design and while relatively simple to make\, it celebrates innovation and embellishment like none other. We’re not only going to make a 3” size\, delicate and  precise\, but we are going to also create the big granddaddy of Lotus Boxes\, the very sturdy 6”\, with lid and pedestal. Both are made with medium Chipboard\, yet they are strong and as sturdy as any box made with .090 bookboard. Demonstrations will include transferring both abstract and representational designs onto the carving material\, carving the stamps\, printing with both stamps pads and acrylic paint\, creating repeating patterns\, and making book cloth from prints on fabric. The carving material that will be used for making the stamps is soft and easy to carve while still retaining crisp details. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Paul Jackson ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online\, SDBA’s Zoom Account \n\n\n\nDay & Dates: Five 4 hour classes\, Tuesdays\, starting February 16\, 23\, March 2\, 9\, & 16 of 2027 \n\n\n\nTime: Pacific Time\, 9:30 AM—1:30 PM\, including breaks \n\n\n\nSkill Level: Intermediate—Some folding history \n\n\n\nClass Description:The course introduces several different techniques for generating\, folding and designing this beautiful and endlessly versatile form of relief pleating. It will introduce students to the techniques of generating zig-zag pleats freehand (that is\, spontaneously\, without location points)\, and by creating 90-degree and 60-degree grids of pre-creased folds from which the zig-zag folds can be selected. Almost all the surfaces can be collapsed flat\, transforming a sheet into a stick. The transformation is dramatic. \n\n\n\nThe basics of the technique are easy to learn\, but at more advanced levels\, the grids and the making/collapsing of the pleats can be slow and exacting\, requiring the manipulation of several folds at the same time. For this reason\, it is recommended that students have some experience of folding paper beyond ‘one-fold’ simple valley/mountain manipulations. Embellishment possibilities are endless\, from different kinds of knobs\, or no knobs at all\, to little frames on the lid\, different interior and exterior papers\, and colors staggered within the four box structure. The four boxes sit on a square base\, glued to the base\, with no end in imagining what treats and treasures can be discovered within the box walls. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: SDBA’s class price includes the $70 supply kit plus mailing costs of $20. \n\n\n\nTools & Supplies: Registrants provide all needed tools. But the Puzzle Box has a secret—underneath the five smaller boxes there is a secret compartment\, perfect for storing private correspondence or some sweet photo memory.
