After an introduction to collage techniques\, participants will create a continuous mixed media collage on a long paper panel\, which will be folded into an accordion style book. On the folds of the accordion\, students will use pop up techniques to cut through their collages\, creating three dimensional areas that both pop out\, and recede. It has a multi compartment top level that is removable. The lid can be fully open and the bottom compartment is dedicated to house bigger sewing items. You will learn tips on how to make a hinged cover. He will also cover all the basic tips and tricks of using fabric for box making. \n\n\n\nArtist Bio: Pietro is native to the northwestern Italian city of Turin where his father Gaetano founded and operated a commercial printing press. His youth spent in the press led him to paper marbling\, restoration and bookbinding. Pietro in 1997 established “La Legatoria del Sole\,” an artisanal and production-oriented bookbindery in Turin. It served Turin’s Municipal Archives\, public and university libraries. After coming to the U.S. he started teaching paper and fabric marbling at the “San Francisco Center for the Book” and at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.  \n\n\n\nTogether with his wife Vanessa he has founded Accardi Book Arts: a book arts studio and bindery in Gardnerville to follow his passion of marbling fabric/paper and to preserve the tradition of handmade books and boxes. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Suzanne Glémot ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n\n\n\nDays & Dates: Saturdays & Wednesday\, August 16\, 20 & 23 of 2025 \n\n\n\nTimes: PT\, Saturdays 9 AM – Noon\, Wednesday 4 – 7 PM \n\n\n\nSkill Level: Most everyone with basic bookbinding experience and comfort with precise measuring\, punching\, and thread tension control \n\n\n\nClass Description:Learn the foundations of the long stitch binding\, a non-adhesive structure with a highly variable spine sewing pattern. Historically used in account and record books across Early Modern Europe\, this technique beautifully balances structural function with decorative elements. \n\n\n\nStudents in this workshop will learn how to design and transpose a sewing pattern onto the spine of a paper case\, based on a chosen number of signatures. Then\, with step-by-step instructions\, students will sew their text blocks into the covering materials through leather supports. Decorative elements such as button closures and stitching/embroidering into case paper will also be covered in demos throughout the class\, and students will learn how to strategize an ‘order of operations’ that fits their design choices. \n\n\n\nParticipants will complete their own long stitch binding and leave the class equipped to pursue variations in their future design. \n\n\n\nPrior experience and skills participants need in order to be successful in this workshop: \n\n\n\nIntroduction to bookbinding (or equivalent skill) is recommended. Students will benefit from understanding grain direction and from having the ability to maintain even sewing tension while binding multiple sections—a key aspect of this book structure. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this structure requires precise drawing and measuring\, down to 1-2mm. Additionally\, the process of ‘punching’ the sewing pattern into the case paper and the sections requires some sustained hand strength. \n\n\n\nInstructor will provide access to class slides and will provide registrants with a write up of instructions ahead of the first session for participants to annotate as they find helpful. \n\n\n\nClass Kits:Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. The rest of the first class will cover the preparation of templates (“patrons”)\, and the second class will focus on printing. Students will be encouraged to experiment with shapes and variations in color application\, and will leave the class with a set of stencils\, tests\, and samples for future reference. At the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have all they need to edition a pochoir print of their own! \n\n\n\nAll levels of experience are welcome! Prior experience with gouache is a bonus\, but not necessary. \n\n\n\nStudents must be able to safely cut stencils into a variety of surfaces using sharp tools without injury. Still wanting to provide an elegant leather binding for their clients\, binders would use a minimal amount of leather to cover the spine and corners. Only about 1-2mm would creep onto the board from the joint. In this workshop students will be creating a classic Millimeter binding\, however\, we will discuss alternative ways to cover. This workshop will offer 2 optional sessions demonstrating edge decoration with graphite and making paste papers\, which are unique features of the Millimeter binding. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will include both live and pre-recorded instruction. This workshop is open to students at an intermediate level. \n\n\n\nNote: for this workshop you MUST have access to a job backer or backing irons\, or a comparable substitute. A punching cradle enables you to punch right through the center of the signature fold. This step is crucial to ensure your sewing is accurate and your binding functions properly. This collapsible cradle is easy to store and great for traveling. The cradle can be re-inforced again and again with a new piece of bookcloth. Once you have the steps down you can make a cradle of any size. It offers protection to worn and damaged books using few materials at a relatively low cost. The “tuxedo” wrapper\, as it is also known\, can be overlooked as an accessible enclosure — but has a great deal of artistic potential\, especially for prints\, books\, photographs\, and drawings. \n\n\n\nIn this online workshop\, students will follow along with a live demo to make a tuxedo-style wrapper\, complete with a self-locking flap. In the second part of the class\, we’ll also look at how to make: \n\n\n\n\na flat\, envelope-like wrapper\,\n\n\n\na wrapper closing mechanism made with buttons and braided thread\,\n\n\n\nand\, we’ll cover the use of cutting and layering as a way to introduce decorative elements to the wrapper.\n\n\n\n\nThe class will dive into materials\, adhesives\, and tools. We’ll explore paper/card stock candidates for future projects\, as well and other elements such as threads\, tapes\, and cutting implements. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. With the instructor’s guidance\, students can work on classic patterns with more of an eye for nuances in color harmony and pattern refinement.  \n\n\n\nStudents will build upon their marbling skills with the introduction of new techniques like over-marbling\, where one pattern is superimposed on an existing pattern. Introduction to the world of metallic paint will add excitement to the class\, as metallics are seldom used in marbling due to their weight being a factor in floating on the water bath.  \n\n\n\nPietro will assist in troubleshooting the common mistakes made when marbling\, as well as dealing with the many known and unknown variables that affect this art form. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. Limp binding structures came about as a way for binders to quickly construct an elegant and durable binding for this new demand. This beautiful style of binding is suitable for conservation or new bindings. Students will learn the proper sewing pattern for this structure\, create hand-sewn end bands and how to properly fold the cover before lacing in the text block. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor.
