DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Suzanne Glémot ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n\n\n\nDates: Saturdays—July 19 & 26 of 2025 \n\n\n\nTime: Pacific Time\, 9 – 11:30 AM \n\n\n\nSkill Level: All levels welcome! \n\n\n\nClass Description:Learn the foundations of pochoir—a stencil-based printing technique that took off in France during the first part of the 20th century—in this two-part virtual workshop. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start the class with a short presentation on the history of pochoir\, during which we’ll look at several examples of the technique in practice. The rest of the first class will cover the preparation of templates (“patrons”)\, and the second class will focus on printing. Students will be encouraged to experiment with shapes and variations in color application\, and will leave the class with a set of stencils\, tests\, and samples for future reference. At the conclusion of the workshop\, participants will have all they need to edition a pochoir print of their own! \n\n\n\nAll levels of experience are welcome! Prior experience with gouache is a bonus\, but not necessary. \n\n\n\nStudents must be able to safely cut stencils into a variety of surfaces using sharp tools without injury. Still wanting to provide an elegant leather binding for their clients\, binders would use a minimal amount of leather to cover the spine and corners. Only about 1-2mm would creep onto the board from the joint. In this workshop students will be creating a classic Millimeter binding\, however\, we will discuss alternative ways to cover. This workshop will offer 2 optional sessions demonstrating edge decoration with graphite and making paste papers\, which are unique features of the Millimeter binding. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will include both live and pre-recorded instruction. This workshop is open to students at an intermediate level. \n\n\n\nNote: for this workshop you MUST have access to a job backer or backing irons\, or a comparable substitute. This is the ultimate class for making your own marbled book cloth or a sewing project. A punching cradle enables you to punch right through the center of the signature fold. This step is crucial to ensure your sewing is accurate and your binding functions properly. This collapsible cradle is easy to store and great for traveling. The cradle can be re-inforced again and again with a new piece of bookcloth. Once you have the steps down you can make a cradle of any size. Students will make a cradle to fit signatures up to 320mm (12.5”).  \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. It offers protection to worn and damaged books using few materials at a relatively low cost. The “tuxedo” wrapper\, as it is also known\, can be overlooked as an accessible enclosure — but has a great deal of artistic potential\, especially for prints\, books\, photographs\, and drawings. \n\n\n\nIn this online workshop\, students will follow along with a live demo to make a tuxedo-style wrapper\, complete with a self-locking flap. In the second part of the class\, we’ll also look at how to make: \n\n\n\n\na flat\, envelope-like wrapper\,\n\n\n\na wrapper closing mechanism made with buttons and braided thread\,\n\n\n\nand\, we’ll cover the use of cutting and layering as a way to introduce decorative elements to the wrapper.\n\n\n\n\nThe class will dive into materials\, adhesives\, and tools. We’ll explore paper/card stock candidates for future projects\, as well and other elements such as threads\, tapes\, and cutting implements. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. With the instructor’s guidance\, students can work on classic patterns with more of an eye for nuances in color harmony and pattern refinement.  \n\n\n\nStudents will build upon their marbling skills with the introduction of new techniques like over-marbling\, where one pattern is superimposed on an existing pattern. Introduction to the world of metallic paint will add excitement to the class\, as metallics are seldom used in marbling due to their weight being a factor in floating on the water bath.  \n\n\n\nPietro will assist in troubleshooting the common mistakes made when marbling\, as well as dealing with the many known and unknown variables that affect this art form. \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. Limp binding structures came about as a way for binders to quickly construct an elegant and durable binding for this new demand. This beautiful style of binding is suitable for conservation or new bindings. This four sided box is secured with ivory clasps\, a wonderful combination of function and aesthetics. Often used as a protective cover for special books or papers\, we will make a box the perfect size for special tools\, pens or other small objects approximately 7 3/4” x 3 1/4” x 2″ We will cover the Hako Chitsu with vibrant book cloth and traditional Japanese hand screened Chiyogami papers\, although you could certainly substitute your own hand marbled or other fine papers. Nervous beginners are welcome!  \n\n\n\nClass Description:What is a Pop-up and what is not? How far can we stretch the definition? What are the basic principles\, and how can we use\, abuse\, and play with them to create highly personal work?  \n\n\n\nThe course will ask these and other open-ended questions\, so that you thoroughly learn the fundamentals of pop-ups and thoroughly learn how to manipulate and combine them\, similar to learning how to use a set of notes in a musical scale to create many different harmonies and dissonances. Making pop-ups is a fun\, intuitive and quick process\, based on simple measuring techniques.  \n\n\n\nPaul has taught pop-ups to students of design and groups of makers on many occasions. Students should be making sewn bindings independently\, outside a workshop setting. \n\n\n\nClass Description:In this session we will make a multicolor\, single core endband. The two rows of vertical wraps give this style an architectural feel. Varying the number of colors used varies the size of the bead. This luxury endband can accommodate as many colors as you wish and need not be sewn in any prescribed pattern. \n\n\n\nHandsewn endbands are an elegant addition to any binding. With little a practice you’ll sew them in a flash and remember the technique forever. \n\n\n\nEndbands are the ideal skill to learn online: the view is so much larger on even the smallest device\, far better than you could get peering over the instructor’s shoulder. The recordings will allow you to watch the demo over and over\, and at a normal\, slowed down or accelerated speed. \n\n\n\nTools and Supplies:All tools and supplies to be provided by registrant. It can also provide a unique opportunity for storing various groups of objects\, such as a netsuke collection\, small fossils or other natural objects such as shells\, miniatures\, sayings\, or small journals or books. The four walls contain a variety of shelves\, drawers\, boxes\, and nooks. There is a basic structure but room for individual creativity as well. It is constructed of high quality bookboard\, covered with bookcloth\, Chiyogami and other strong and beautiful handmade papers.
