Nervous beginners are welcome!  \n\n\n\nClass Description:What is a Pop-up and what is not? How far can we stretch the definition? What are the basic principles\, and how can we use\, abuse\, and play with them to create highly personal work?  \n\n\n\nThe course will ask these and other open-ended questions\, so that you thoroughly learn the fundamentals of pop-ups and thoroughly learn how to manipulate and combine them\, similar to learning how to use a set of notes in a musical scale to create many different harmonies and dissonances. Students should be making sewn bindings independently\, outside a workshop setting. \n\n\n\nClass Description:In this session we will make a multicolor\, single core endband. The two rows of vertical wraps give this style an architectural feel. Varying the number of colors used varies the size of the bead. This luxury endband can accommodate as many colors as you wish and need not be sewn in any prescribed pattern. \n\n\n\nHandsewn endbands are an elegant addition to any binding. With little a practice you’ll sew them in a flash and remember the technique forever. \n\n\n\nEndbands are the ideal skill to learn online: the view is so much larger on even the smallest device\, far better than you could get peering over the instructor’s shoulder. It can also provide a unique opportunity for storing various groups of objects\, such as a netsuke collection\, small fossils or other natural objects such as shells\, miniatures\, sayings\, or small journals or books. The four walls contain a variety of shelves\, drawers\, boxes\, and nooks. There is a basic structure but room for individual creativity as well. It is constructed of high quality bookboard\, covered with bookcloth\, Chiyogami and other strong and beautiful handmade papers. This is a fast-paced workshop for students experienced with traditional binding. Students should be making sewn bindings independently\, outside a workshop setting. \n\n\n\nClass Description:In this session we will sew a simple one-color endband made with #18 linen bookbinding thread. It is appropriate for historic bindings or any time you want a quick\, simple\, discrete\, one-color endband. This endband can also be laced into the book’s boards. \n\n\n\nclick for more\nHandsewn endbands are an elegant addition to any binding. With little a practice you’ll sew them in a flash and remember the technique forever. \n\n\n\nEndbands are the ideal skill to learn online: the view is so much larger on even the smallest device\, far better than you could get peering over the instructor’s shoulder. Students should be comfortable learning new ones on their own time if necessary.  \n\n\n\nClass Description:This 6-session course will support each student through the creation of their own individual artist’s book – that is\, a book that unifies craft and concept into a cohesive whole. We will look at ways that a book’s physical form can reflect and enhance the ideas it “contains.” Materials might inspire a book’s content\, or the other way around. This relationship between form and content will be the generative principle for the book you make during our series of classes. \n\n\n\nClick for more details\nDuring class time\, we will look at examples of artist books and the different components that must be harmonized to create a successful work of art. Instructors and students will explore approaches and give feedback\, as a group\, for each developing work. Instructors will also discuss practical aspects such as making mock-ups\, where to find tutorials and supplies\, and what to put in your colophon.  \n\n\n\nIn between classes\, students will source materials on their own (inspired by our class conversations) and will work independently on their projects. These 20th century designs created by Carmencho Arregui are greatly inspired by the Long Stitch bindings of the medieval era. It is suitable in conservation or new bindings\, such as travel journals or decorative bindings. We will use strong\, beautiful Chiyogami papers as well as book cloth and book board. The key to this beautiful box is accurate measuring\, sharp creasing\, and an eye for symmetry and color.  \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor.
