SUMMARY:The Flatback Case Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Daniel Kelm ( artist bio ) \n\n\n\nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n\n\n\nDays: Thursdays\, every other week \n\n\n\nDate: March 12\, 26\, April 9\, 23\, May 7\, 21\, & June 4\, 2026 \n\n\n\nTime: 10 AM to 1:30PM\, Pacific Time\, including breaks \n\n\n\nSkill Level: All levels \n\n\n\nClass Description:Imagine a flatback binding that opens beautifully\, each and every spread opening flat! \n\n\n\nIn this course\, you will make two books: one with a traditional sewn-all-along text block comprised of text-weight paper folded and gathered into sections; and a board book (what Tim Ely calls a Drumleaf) configuration that opens completely flat even with thick printmaking paper. Consider the appeal of a print stretching from one fore edge to the other\, interrupted only by the fold. This is achievable with the board-book-style text block. No thread interrupts the visual of the image. \n\n\n\nThe boards will be paper-covered\, and your spine will be covered in cloth. \n\n\n\nThe materials kit will include enough pieces to make models at various stages of production. These will serve as excellent reminders when you come back again and again to use this binding structure. \n\n\n\nWe will have ample opportunity for discussing a broad range of topics\, such as: the dynamics of how books open and close; the use of wet gluing with polyvinyl acetate (PVA) and paste\, and how to modify the adhesive to give it desirable working characteristics; and the management of the drying operations that result with the use of wet glue. \n\n\n\nFurther notes from Daniel:“I was inspired to create this binding style when I first saw Gary Frost’s Sewn Boards Binding. The Sewn Boards Binding is suitable for a small book with a text block of a limited number of signatures. The cover boards are flush with the text block\, and the spine is offset. Gary’s development of an offset spine configuration is a great innovation\, and set my imagination working. \n\n\n\nThe offset attachment of the spine is the reason the book is so flexible and opens beautifully. The spine piece of the case is not attached at the spine edge of the cover boards\, as in other books\, but\, rather\, the spine piece attaches some distance in from the spine edge. This seemingly small change results in much more flexibility and movement. \n\n\n\nI asked myself: What if I keep the offset spine\, but take a more finished approach to the covers? A “square” would be attractive. A “square” means the cover boards are some small dimension larger than the text block. \n\n\n\nThe term “case binding” refers to a structure in which the text block and case (the two covers with the spine in between) are constructed independently\, and then brought together in a final assembly. \n\n\n\nMy Flatback Case binding has a case with offset spine that is a three-piece construction—the spine and two cover boards. This means it is built up of smaller\, simpler pieces\, and lends itself to an efficient production process. This binding is suitable for one-of-a-kinds but especially valuable when editioning. \n\n\n\nThe traditional rounded and backed binding is much more common than flatback styles\, but the flatback has the advantage of being simpler overall. For example\, less equipment and less experience are required. In addition\, the flatback has a more contemporary\, less traditional look.” \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor. Shipping and kit costs are included in the class price.* \n\n\n\nTools & Supplies: All tools and some supplies to be provided by registrant. Guidance will be offered in SDBA’s timely Welcome Letter or the teacher’s PDFs. \n\n\n\nClass Recordings: Class Recordings will be available to all registrants for one month following each class. \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $540Member: $700Non-member: $775 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount. SUMMARY:Double Panel Binding—Three Sessions (with kit)
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Erin Fletcher (artist bio)Venue: Online (Zoom)Days & Dates: Fridays & Tuesday\, July 24\, 28\, & 31 of 2026Workshop times: Pacific Time\, Session 1: 10 AM – 11 AM\, Sessions 2 & 3: 10 AM – Noon Skill Level: All levels\, some binding experience helpful  \n\n\n\nClass Description: The Double Panel Binding came about when Erin was creating a decorative binding for a large\, unwieldy accordion text block. The goal was to develop a binding style that could open completely flat making it easier to unfurl the accordion. Pulling from box-making techniques learned from John DeMerritt and der gebrochene rücken (a variant of the German Bradel Binding)\, the covers come together when fully opened\, inviting a design that can span across the entire binding. Each board is constructed separately and out of two covered panels. The inner boards conceal the spine attachment and give space to sew in the accordion or single signature. \n\n\n\nIn addition to making a model of the Double Panel binding\, we will also print one-of-a-kind mono prints for covering the outer boards.  \n\n\n\nRequired Tools and Supplies: Bookbinding Tools \n\n\n\n\nBlue Tape\n\n\n\nBone Folder\n\n\n\nCraft Knife (Olfa or X-Acto)\n\n\n\nCutting Mat\n\n\n\nGlue Brush – size: small and medium\n\n\n\nPencil\n\n\n\nPin Vise (size B) or Awl\n\n\n\nPVA • Ruler – with metric\n\n\n\nSanding Block or Stick\n\n\n\nScissors\n\n\n\nSewing Needle – #18\n\n\n\nThread: 18/3 Dyed Linen\n\n\n\nTriangle – 45/45/90\n\n\n\nWaste Paper\n\n\n\nWeights \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPrintmaking Tools \n\n\n\n\nBrayer – soft rubber (have 1-3 on hand)\n\n\n\nClean-up supplies: paper towels\, spray bottle with water\, baby wipes\n\n\n\nGelli Plate (or similar brand) – size: 8 x 10″ or smaller\n\n\n\nMark making tools – botanicals (real or fake)\, stencils\, doilies\, mesh\, bubble wrap\, cotton swabs\, brushes\, sponges\, etc.\n\n\n\nPaint – fluid acrylic (matte or metallic)\n\n\n\nWaste Paper \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $160Member: $200Non-member: $275 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Erin Fletcher (artist bio)Venue: Online (Zoom)Days & Dates: Tuesdays & Friday\, September 1\, 4\, & 8 of 2026Workshop times: Pacific Time\, 10 AM – Noon Skill Level: All levels\, some binding experience helpful  \n\n\n\nClass Description: Finding inspiration in a 15th century limp vellum binding where the cover was formed into a wallet\, Clara Gevaert slowly began to develop her Envelope Binding structure. This simple\, yet rather elegant structure requires very little adhesive and each cover is folded out of a single sheet of handmade paper. The book opens relatively flat and is suitable for lightweight text blocks. \n\n\n\nStudents should purchase 4 sheets of paper from the Morgan Conservatory. These sheets will be used for the covers\, so Erin suggests purchasing 4 of the same color or 2 sets of matching colors. Here’s the link for the recommended paper: https://www.morganconservatory.com/product/abaca-cotton-color-variety/781? cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=FERKL3NWIDT6PBHAZQY446X C \n\n\n\nClass Kits: Class materials kits will be sent by the instructor\, but each student will be responsible for ordering their full sheets of paper.  \n\n\n\nClass Fees:Early Enrollment Program (EEP): $200Member: $250Non-member: $325 \n\n\n\nEarly Enrollment Program (EEP) is a member only\, non-refundable discount.
