Class Description:
The Double Panel Binding came about when Erin was creating a decorative binding for a large, unwieldy accordion text block. The goal was to develop a binding style that could open completely flat making it easier to unfurl the accordion. Pulling from box-making techniques learned from John DeMerritt and der gebrochene rücken (a variant of the German Bradel Binding), the covers come together when fully opened, inviting a design that can span across the entire binding. Each board is constructed separately and out of two covered panels. The inner boards conceal the spine attachment and give space to sew in the accordion or single signature.
In addition to making a model of the Double Panel binding, we will also print one-of-a-kind mono prints for covering the outer boards.
